Health insurance calculator
Let’s find the right health insurance. What is your occupation?
How the estimate works
We use your occupation, income and age to model both systems.
GKV is income-based (capped; employees split with employer). PKV depends on age & coverage.
Students/apprentices often have special GKV rates. GKV may include family co-insurance.
This is an estimate, not a binding offer. Exact amounts vary by fund add-on, law changes, underwriting and tariff options.

What affects your premium?
GKV (Public)
- Gross income (up to the ceiling)
- Fund’s additional contribution
- Employment status (employee vs self-employed)
- Long-term care contribution
PKV (Private)
- Age and health underwriting
- Coverage level & extras (dental, hospital, excess)
- Children/dependents as separate tariffs
- Tariff / provider pricing
FAQ
Is this a binding quote?
No—this is an estimate. Public contributions depend on your fund’s additional rate and legal changes; private premiums depend on tariff, health, and underwriting.
When is PKV cheaper than GKV?
Often at higher incomes without dependents, or when choosing leaner coverage. At lower/mid incomes or with family co-insurance, GKV may be more affordable.
Can my family be insured for free in GKV?
Yes, non-earning spouses and children can often be co-insured at no extra cost in GKV. In PKV, dependents usually need their own tariffs.
I’m self-employed—why does GKV look high?
Self-employed pay the full contribution (no employer share) and a minimum assessment base can apply, which raises the monthly amount at low profits.
I’m new to Germany—can I use this?
Yes. However, eligibility rules vary by residence status and employment type. Use the calculator to gauge costs, then request personalised advice.
What documents do I need to switch?
Typically ID/residence, proof of income, current insurance details, and (for PKV) a health questionnaire. We’ll guide you during the quote process.
